Abbie Wood - Body Dysmorphia

Artist statement:

Perceptions of beauty and body confidence have long been influenced by mainstream sources such a television, film and print media. The increased prevalence of digital image manipulation software in terms of application and access, has been demonstrated to have had a negative impact on body confidence, particularly in young females.

Body Dysmorphia is an exploration of notions of body confidence in different-sized models. In responding physically to directions such as: “look Sexy”, “look Confident”, “look Bigger”, “look Smaller” and “look Happy”, the resultant poses are presented as a series of portraits for the viewer to analyse, with a view to deciphering suggestions of insecurities, confidence and ambivalence.

It is hoped that projects of this nature could make a useful contribution to education and psychology, and help raise awareness of the health issues associated with body dysmorphia.
