Amy Tomlinson - God's of Modern Day

Artist statement:

Gods of Modern Day is a series of Fine Art portraits that depict Greek Gods in contemporary scenes.

For example, Dionysus, the God of Wine, is depicted in a Night Club setting; whilst

Demeter, the goddess of harvest, is seen perched on a hay bale within a crop field presenting a fast food cup instead of her traditional wheat or torch. Ares, the God of War has been depicted against the ruins of Athens, styled with what is typically seen in street riots that link to Are’s typically signifiers. Ares yields a wooden slate instead of a spear and a baseball cap and heavy eye make up instead of his typical helmet.

The notion behind God’s of Modern Day was to bring the God’s that were held in such high esteem down to our level. In doing this encourage people to reconsider the ethics and values they held dear in contemporary society. For example would people of ancient civilisation be as gratified to present Demeter with fast food over food they had cultivated over the year? How would life be if we treated ourselves and those around us with the same reverence as Gods were treated with in the past? Would life be better or worse?
